Publication Process

Currently, the BMM editorial group consists of five editorial board members and the editorial staff, being members of the Department of Neurobiology and the University Library, both at Bielefeld University.

The publication process from submission to publishing on our website is scheduled to three month:

  • Submission: Submission will be accepted  via Email (a system based submission is in preparation). Manuscripts should be prepared with the BMM article template (see Guidelines for details). After submitting a paper, the editorial coordinator will check, if your submission meets the aims and scope of Brains, Minds & Media.
  • Single blind peer review: Two established scientist will be asked for reviewing your paper, either by one of the editorial board members or by the editorial coordinator. The reviewers will have a six week maximum time slot for the main review. If there are remarks to the author, she will have two weeks to respond. The second review cycle shall be done within three weeks.
  • Publication: BMM publishes no issues (except special issues) but prefers subsequent publishing. Hence, accepted articles will be published immediately. The publishing process includes the formal editing check as well as the production of a printer friendly pdf-version of your article. The article will be uploaded with metadata in rtf format and converted to XML and HTML. Additionally, a pdf file will be generated from the rtf version. Once published, your contribution is part of the BMM repository based on Fedora, an open source software for managing and delivering digital content.
  • Dissemination: Published articles can be found by libaries via OAI-PMH, allowing for a metadata harvesting from other databases. Private users may also use web search engines, like Google and Google Scholar and open indexes, like the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Indexing by PubMed Central is in preparation, indexing by ISI, including a citation index, requires a three year ongoing publshing activity, which is not yet reached by BMM.

Each new article will be announced via our BMM newsletter as well via community mailing lists. If you want us to announce our articles in your mailing list,   please let us know.

Additionally, pdf versions of any BMM article may be made available for download by anyone. Dissemination of pdf versions, e.g. via email, is permitted, given that the author's copyright is not violated. Please see our license agreement for details.
